Dr. Freire, a Brazilian educator, taught 450 migrant workers to read in 45 hours. He believed that life experiences of "reading the world" helped to "read the word." Dr. Roach Van Allen, a professor at the University of Arizona, coined the phrase, "What you think you can say, what you say you can write, and what you write you can read." Therefore, according to Dr. Van Allen, the writing process comes before reading, and personal experiences are the impetus of the reading process. Dr. Robert Sweet, a researcher from the National Institutes of Health, conducted a study in 2001, that reported a child before age 5, has a 24,000 word oral vocabulary. Dr. Stone's READING-RIGHT program is based on these theories, and this research. Skills are developed and built through the personal written word. Then, the reader has a vital association with what s/he is
learning. The reader can then relate literature from other authors, to words and concepts that are already familiar.
